Why Waste? is a platform created with the objective of contributing to the global efforts of combating climate change.


Welcome to our privacy policy document. We take the protection and safe handling of your data incredibly seriously, and hope that you are able to find all the information you need within this document.


This document contains the following information:


Savings of Water entered by you in the app are uploaded to an external database as explained below. This data is anonymous and cannot be used to identify you as an individual.


What data we collect and why

  1. Your identity & access:

    We will typically ask for information such as your name and email address. We will not use your name in external marketing communications or any public statements without your permission.

    Please note that logins from multiple devices are treated as independent users.


  2. Your monthly emissions savings summary:

    We collect your Water savings targets and avoided emissions recorded under the four categories: 1) travel 2) home / office 3) materials 4) social responsibility. This data is anonymous and does not contain your personal information.


  3. Cumulative GHG emissions savings:

    Your avoided Water Consumption is also aggregated into a cumulative record of all app users. This data is anonymous and does not contain your personal information.


  4. Country:

Your country is detected in the app, and this information is used to fix Water Savings target for you. Your country name is uploaded in an anonymous form to the external database for analysis purposes.


Information we do not collect:

We do not collect any characteristics of protected classifications including age, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or physical and mental abilities or disabilities. We also do not collect and sensitive information such as bank account details, credit/debit cards details or any document/instrument of such nature. You may provide these data voluntarily, such as if you include a pronoun preference in your email signature when writing into our Support team.


How we use data collected from you

Our default practice is not to access your information. If at any point we need to access your account to help you with a Support case, we will ask for your consent before proceeding. We have an obligation to protect the privacy and safety of our customers. We will use a

GDPR-approved authentication service provider, Firebase, to manage user login information. Storage of Data: All data obtained after login is stored on our Firebase user pool. We do not sell our user’s data to any third party.

Aggregated avoided water consumption of all app users is periodically downloaded and displayed in the app as cumulative savings. The collected data may be used for analysis purposes.We only use aggregated data and no PII data for analysis purposes.

Why Waste? does not sell, rent, trade or otherwise disclose personal information about our Site visitors (nor our offline donors), except as described here. We share information our Site visitors provide with service providers that we have retained to perform services on our behalf ― for example, to process donations, send direct mails, emailers, greeting cards, making phone calls, and others. We may share your information like phone numbers, email address, etc. with these agencies so that they can perform these activities efficiently. We do not authorize these service providers to use or disclose the information except as necessary to perform services on our behalf or to comply with legal requirements. However, since we do not have complete control over these third parties, we cannot guarantee your privacy. In addition, we may disclose information about you (i) if we are required to do so by law, (ii) in response to a request from law enforcement authorities or other government officials, (iii) when we believe disclosure is
